Child safety seats, property installed and used, save children’s lives. Proper use of a child safety seat can reduce fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under. Child safety seats and safety belts, when installed and used correctly, can prevent injuries and save lives. Unrestrained children are more likely to be injured, suffer sever injuries and die in motor vehicle crashes than children who are restrained.
75% of motor vehicle crashes occur within 25 miles of home. In addition, 60% of crashes occur on roads with posted speed limits of 40 mph or less.
Our coordinator has been trained by the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation as a Car Seat Technician who will inspect your child's car seat to insure proper installation and safety for your child. He will also provide information to the parent(s) on how to properly install a car seat, how to secure their child in the seat, and when to upgrade the seat for their growing child.
Please stop by our office or contact childseat@wechcpc.com for more information and to set an appointment.
Throughout the week we patrol the West End and Coal Harbour communities on bikes. Our patrol members wear bright yellow jackets or shirts and can easily be recognized throughout the neighbourhoods. While patrolling we search for and locate stolen vehicles, report suspicious activity or individuals to the police department, and speak with members of the community and businesses to answer questions about crime and safety. All volunteers are provided with the necessary bicycle training by our instructors. Several times a year, volunteers are offered CanBike 2 training at no cost. The training takes place at a Vancouver Community Policing Centre and teaches proper cycling and crash avoidance techniques. The course is approximately 20 hours long and usually takes place over 3 weeks. Our Centre also provides our volunteers with helmets, bikes, safety vests, first aid kits, and uniforms.
Twice each day, our volunteer members lace up their shoes and walk throughout the neighbourhoods. Our foot patrol members wear bright yellow jackets or shirts and can easily be recognized throughout the neighbourhoods. The foot patrol members inspect parked vehicles for theft risk and leave information pamphlets on the vehicles, report suspicious activity or individuals to the police department, search for and locate stolen vehicles, and speak with members of the community and businesses to answer questions about crime and safety.
This program is run in conjunction with ICBC. Our volunteer members setup speed radars at "hot spots" throughout the community. These "hot spots" are areas where residents and concerned citizens have reported speeding vehicles in their neighbourhoods. We setup the radar and display vehicle speeds to the motorists. We record each vehicle's speed and forward these numbers to ICBC and the police department to be analyzed. Police Officers often join us and pull over vehicles that continue to speed after being clocked on our radar.
The Child Find program was started to assist the police agencies in tracking missing children. We take your children's fingerprints and record his/her physical characteristics in a booklet that you keep. In the unlikely event that your child goes missing, this booklet will assist police in efficiently tracking down your missing child. Please stop by our office for more information.
1. I have volunteered to participate in Operation Combat Auto Theft (C.A.T.), an auto decal registration program, with my local police department. I will receive a C.A.T. decal which I will place in the upper left corner of the rear of side window of the above described vehicle(s).
2. By participating in this program, I am certifying to the Police Department that my vehicle(s) is not normally operated between the hours of 1:00 am and 5:00 am. If the police observe a person operating my vehicle during these hours, they will reasonably suspect that such person is in possession of said vehicle without proper authorization. This knowledge permits the police to make an investigative stop of the vehicle. I understand that in order to withdraw from participation in this program I must fully remove the decal from my vehicle. I further agree to remove the decal prior to the sale or transfer of ownership of my participating vehicle(s).
3. I realize that persons operating these vehicles between the hours of 1:00 am and 5:00 am, with my consent, are subject to a police stop. In these instance, police action protect officers when approaching a potentially stolen vehicle.
4. I understand fully the purpose of this program and the advantage of disadvantages, if any, that might occur from these procedures which are designed to reduce the occurrence of automotive theft.
5. I hereby consent the agree to abide by these procedures. I confirm that I have fully read and understand the above and all information has been completed prior to signing
We have an engraver at our office available to residents that would like to engrave their property for identification. In the event that your possessions are stolen they can be traced if they are engraved.
Bring your bicycle by our office and we can engrave your bike with your Drivers License or BC Identification Number. Our office also provides Bike Registration forms, which owners can complete with details of their bike. We recommend that everyone register their bicycles at www.propertycop.org. The serial number on a bike can typically be found by turning the bike upside down and looking on the frame right under the pedal assembly. The police department recovers hundreds of stolen bicycles each year, but unfortunately very few find their way back to the owner due to the lack of bicycle identification.
Our community policing office is not capable of providing Criminal Record checks. If you reside in the City of Vancouver you can have a criminal record check completed at the Vancouver Police Main Street Office at 312 Main Street. If you reside outside the City of Vancouver, please check with your local police department of the nearest location to have a criminal record check completed. You can have a criminal record check completed during the times stated below. Please note the fees that are required to complete your criminal record check request.
