Streetfront Office - Victim Information Services:
|
Through the street front office, volunteers, staff and the Neighbourhood Police Officer (NPO) record and respond to citizens’ crime and safety complaints/concerns. We receive found property, provide community resource information and referrals. We also receive valuable information about crime in the community which has already helped to facilitate several arrests of known drug dealers.
WECHCPC office volunteers and staff work closely with city staff to follow-up on civic related complaints and concerns such as graffiti, garbage, abandoned vehicles, noise complaints, and damaged public property. The office is also the hub for CPC community projects and programs.
Through our office, we can also provide registration for the Combat Auto Theft (C.A.T.) program, lending of a property engraver, Bike ID kits, Child Find ID kits, information on crime prevention, referrals to numerous community service providers, and much more.
|
Citizen Patrols (Foot, Bike & Pooch):
|
Throughout the week volunteers patrol our neighbourhoods while walking and riding their bikes, or while walking their dogs. The purpose of the patrols is to increase presence in problem areas and record and report suspicious and criminal activity. Volunteers do security audits of neighbourhood vehicles, check for anti-theft equipment, as well as identify and recover stolen and abandoned vehicles.
Patrol volunteers also distribute crime prevention information, crime alerts, and information on CPC services to citizens, businesses, apartment buildings, tourists, and others living in the area.
The WECHCPC participates in local community events and public forums, provides presentations and workshops to promote crime prevention and effective community policing, and along with other community policing centres and the VPD, attends city-wide CPC events.
WECHCPC staff, volunteers, and our NPO are involved with community committees such as the Neighbourhood Integrated Services Team (NIST), the Safer Parking Initiative, the West End BIA Safety and Security committee, Downtown Community Court, and the Safe Harbour program.
You may see WECHCPC volunteers at such events as:
- Lord Roberts Community Police Picnic
- Car-Free West End
- Scotiabank Half Marathon
- Celebration of Light
- Vancouver Marathon
- Vancouver Triathlon
- Pride Parade
- Chariot Festival of India

In October 2010, the City of Vancouver published a report stating that from 1996 to 2006, downtown Vancouver has had more than a 100% increase in Seniors corresponding to a general increase in total population (Seniors in Vancouver Discussion paper). The report also highlights that Elder Abuse and Safety concerns are amongst the top social issues faced by the Senior population. Our Safe Seniors Lunch was developed to provide relevant crime prevention and safety information to the West End`s large population of Senior Citizens in a casual, social setting.
The program is designed to eliviate the fear of victimization amoungst our Seniors by delivering topical and targeted information about crime issues that are most prevalent amongst the elderly. These presentations take place once a month, in different venues throughout the West End, and include handouts on a different topic every month.
Our next presentation will be on Friday, February 17th from 12pm to 2pm at the Roundhouse Community Centre, located at 181 Roundhouse Mews. To register for this FREE event, please call (604) 717-2924.

The Anti-Graffiti program works in partnership with local business owners, the West End BIA, and the City of Vancouver (CoV).
The WECHCPC recruits volunteers and community participants to locate buildings that have been victims of graffiti, and contacts the property owners to sign a consent for the graffiti to be removed. Volunteers count and monitor the number of tags in an area, and develop a database of businesses who are participants in the program.
The CoV, with assistance from the Vancouver Police Department, has provided materials such as paint, brushes, rollers, graffiti wipes, and t-shirts, and continues to give on-going support to this program. The West End BIA liaising with the business community to identify/report graffiti and litter as well as contributes refreshments for graffiti outings. When requested, volunteers also locate, identify and take photos of graffiti for the VPD Anti-Graffiti Squad.
Since its inception, we have had three successful graffiti paint-out events. Check out the Gallery for photos of our inagural event in 2009. In 2011 we partnered with the West End Clean Up group during Keep Vancouver Spectacular in May for a joint community clean-up/graffiti paint-out effort. Check out our facebook page for photos of the 2011 event.

The West End-Coal Harbour Community Policing Centre is committed to helping our community’s most vulnerable. Following the 2010 Winter Olympics we launched a seasonal Homeless Outreach program, and with the help of local businesses, community groups, and residents, our aim is to combat homelessness and drug addiction in the West End and Coal Harbour neighbourhoods.
The program involved volunteer nursing students from Langara College who met with homeless people in the community and assisted them with gaining income assistance, clothing, food resources, temporary or permanent housing, detox, and more. Local businesses set up coin boxes and helped to collect money for organizations that help people overcome homelessness and conquer drug addiction.
Be on the look out for the coin boxes in the winter of 2011. A list of participating vendors will be available in the new year.
